My Drawing Techniques

Does drawing come natural to you? Can you pick up a pad and pencil and draw a subject from memory? If you can, then you have talent. Drawing for me, is an art form that I will never lose. I may lack in some of the form or technique in the initial practice drawings, but it comes back eventually when I'm focused.

I first began drawing in kindergarten all the way up until now or to say the least, a month ago. I enjoy drawing, and when I am really into it, I can deliver pencil to paper for countless hours at a time. When I hold a drawing tool in my hand, I focus on the subject in front of me, plan out where to place the subject(s), and began the strokes. I use the overhand technique when drawing the contour shape of the subject and normal hold for more detailed lines.

If I have to tackle a difficult subject, I study the shapes, sizes, environment, folds if clothing are involved, buildings etc. to get a sense of how much effort is going to be exerted. Usually if it's that complicated, I have to break out other tools such as molds, stencils, calligraphy pens, a ruler, T-square, if its drafting, (I can draft by hand and use the computer aided graphics) graphite pencils, and all sorts of instruments. The enjoyment is enticed by the finished product. Some may take 2 or 3 sittings if you want to really get a good drawing. Others can take less than 15-30 minutes, depending on how detailed you prefer. One of the best drawings that I have done thus far is a front profile of my face, when I was about 6 years old. I guess because it is a picture of me, it has to be good.

I didn't even know that I could draw until I was in my late twenties, and living in Italy.

I'm sure the picture of you is gorgeous!, have you got an image of it?

Jennifer,

That's great news and I bet you were surprised that you could put pencil to pad and create a lovely picture.  Italy sounds nice. I hope to venture out there sometime. Actually I do have the picture still, I will post it soon and share it with everyone.
