Gunman shot down in Discovery Headquarters in MD

September 1st, 2010 - On a Wednesday afternoon approximately 1300 or 1 pm, for those who are unfamiliar with military time, James Lee, 43, walked inside of the Discovery Channel Headquarters with concealed bombs and a gun in Silver Spring, MD and rounded up hostages for the taking. He apparently disliked the Discovery Channels choice of episodes demanding that they air shows that would save the world. Really save the world, but yet, he defies that by taking hostages to make a point.
As we learned more about the history of this man, it appeared that he has demonstrated his hatred towards the Discovery channel before within a 2 year span. He formed a protest that led to his 10-day arrest for disorderly conduct in 2008. Also in his past he has had a history of mental deficiencies. This man has lost his marbles to think that he can walk inside of a building and take hostages. It is utterly disturbing that this incident occurred.
Lee's brother noticed that his brother's acts were insane. He told ABC News reporters that "he may have wanted to die." He was saddened by the tragedy yet shocked that James would commit such an act. He was named the anti-environmentalist by many who reported this news story. It is crazy. What is this world coming to? Having an opinion about something is one thing, but executing it out by taking hostages is no way to get justice. I think that this just goes to show that anyone can lose their marbles circumvented by strong feelings for a cause. All I know for sure is that he is no hero.

Top-level comments on this article: (5 total)Fanatics come in all shapes and for any number of reasons. What this man did was a sign of mental derangement. Why was he not hospitalized with that history?GraceYes, I agree. With his history of mental illnesses something should have been done about it. His mental state is beyond comprehension.
Scary...good infos buddyThis story shocked me as I heard it over the news. It's about an hour and half drive from me. I was terrified for the hostages.
It's so disturbing how many people seem to have lost touch with reality, and have no ability to be accountable. You're right, this man isn't a hero.He deliberately took action by terrorizing innocent people, and for what cause, just to get shot. I am just glad that no one else was hurt.
Mental illness comes in all shapes and sizes. Sad that we can't circumvent it's most delusional actors.Great article.Yes, his illnesses must have been shadowed somehow. His mentality must have been really low during this act of insanity. Thanks.
